5 Dog Day's Coolers

There is nothing like a cooling fruit smoothie on a hot summer day. Try these exotic combinations to keep your taste buds surprised and and refreshed (just combine ingredients in a blender with ice and puree until smooth.)

1. Pina Colada: 1 cup crushed canned pineapple (in natural juice)
1/2 cup non-fat aspartame-sweetened coconut cream pie yogurt.

2. Mouthwatering Melon: 1 cup seedless watermelon chunks
1/2 cup plain non-fat yogurt

3. Blueberry Lemonade: 1/2 cup fat-free milk
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1 tsp SF lemonade powder

4. Kiwi-Strawberry: 1/2 cup fat-free milk
1/2 cup peeled kiwi
1/2 cup frozen strawberries

5. Creamy Apricot: 1/2 cup low-fat soy milk
1/2 cup chopped apricots
dash of cinnamon

* Please note: Many of these recipes call for nonfat yogurt, both plain and fruit flavored. In all cases, the nutritive value of the recipes was calculated based on nonfat plain yogurt, or nonfat flavored yogurt which was sweetened with aspartame.
* For a thicker texture, blend with frozen fruit. (Wash fruit, dry well, and stem or peel; slice if necessary. Freeze in an airtight container or a zip-lock plastic bag until solid, at least 2 hours or up to several days.) If you don't have time to freeze the fruit, simply whirl in some crushed ice until smoothie is as thick as you like.

* For added creaminess in any of these smoothies, add low-fat or non-fat milk, soy milk, yogurt, frozen yogurt, or ice cream.

* To make ahead, blend your smoothie, pour it into a freezerproof glass or cup, cover airtight, and store in the freezer until you want it (up to 3 days). Thaw smoothie until it's ready - a great breakfast or lunch on the run.

* If your fruit's not quite ripe, add a small amount of honey or sugar to taste; powdered sugar dissolves faster than granulated, but either one works fine.

There's nothing like a refreshing smoothie to help cool you down. They are nutritious, quick, and delicious. You can make them with just fruit, or add dairy products such as yogurt or nonfat ice cream to make them creamy and rich. Add wheat germ, ground oats, or other nutritious items to boost the vitamin and fiber content for a quick breakfast in a glass.
Smoothies have been around since the 1960s, but have become more popular since the late 90s. It's easy to find Smoothie shops, and most restaurants offer their own signature flavors. Smoothies are not only enjoyed by the consumers, but they also result in a high profit for the restaurants. The following was taken from "Nation's Restaurant News, July 1999:"
